Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
